Nelson was formed in the 1800’s after Queen Victoria gave it a Royal Charter. It was originally two villages, Little Marsden and Great Marsden. Its name came from the Admiral Lord Nelson Inn, a pub next to the newly built railway line.

Nelson grew as a town in the 19th century on the back of the industrial revolution. Textiles, especially cotton, were profitably produced, evidence of which can still be seen today in the buildings and architecture. Other factories, such as the Jelly Babies and Victory V sweet manufacturers, provided alternative employment and helped the town thrive.

Although Nelson declined during the 20th century along with many other Lancashire ‘mill towns’, long-term investment in the area by firms such as David Phillips & Partners Solicitors, are helping it develop in new areas, such as service and technical industries.

Famous former residents of the town include  John Simm, star of BBC’s ‘Life on Mars’, and Joe Fagan, who played for Nelson F.C. and went on to manage Liverpool F.C. to their first historic ‘treble’ of trophies including winning the European Cup.
