Majority of Scots back independence from the UK, new Tecmark poll reveals

1

The majority of Scottish residents are behind plans for Scotland to become an independent state, following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

That’s the view from a recent survey* carried out on behalf of Tecmark, which found that 57% of Scots would back Scottish independence.

Many will remember 2014’s Scottish independence referendum, which found in favour of the ‘Better Together’ campaign. However, the mood seems to have changed since Brexit.

While Westminster is planning the country’s exit strategy, Nicola Sturgeon is trying her best to agree a deal to keep Scotland within the EU – a move which many, but not all, have welcomed.

According to our survey, it’s Scotland’s 25 – 34 (68%) year olds who are more likely to back a separation from Great Britain, compared with 61% of those aged 65+.

What Brexit means for UK businesses

Tecmark’s director, Richard Heyes, has weighed in on the debate around Brexit and the effects it could potentially have on UK businesses.

“It’s interesting to see how recent events have affected Scottish residents’ view on independence. It was only last year that the country voted in favour of remaining a part of the UK,” he explained.

“As someone running a company, my primary concern with Brexit and now with talk of a second Scottish Independence referendum is the impact on business.

“These are testing times for businesses with a lot of uncertainty. But we’re resilient and I fully expect that, whatever decisions and changes lie ahead, the British business community will adapt.”

About Tecmark’s survey and the power of data

Tecmark’s search director, Stacey MacNaught, recently gave a talk at the annual SAScon conference in Manchester about using data to create engaging on-page content.

Stacey spoke at length about the importance of writing a story that’s timely, relevant and emotive – it’s a practice we’ve long adopted here at Tecmark when creating our own campaigns and posts.

Brexit has dominated the headlines recently; it’s the subject everyone is talking about, which is why we commission this Google consumer survey.

As with any story, it’s important to find a unique or newsworthy angle. In this case, we chose to look at Scotland’s attitudes toward Brexit and the country’s generational divide.
